Nothing wrong with this product, if you have it locked-up somewhere out of sight. The fan is very loud, to the point you can not ignore it. Do not recommend it. Buy D-link networked storage instead. I have both.

Everything is great about this unit(design, form factor, aluminium casing, air vents) EXCEPT the fan noise. it is simply annoying without any mods. Since I can’t really return this in my country, i opened it up and soldered a 120 Ohm resistor in series with the fan. that quietened it down A LOT. Now its really running nice and cool and quiet and really tolerable. I love it now. The 2 harddisk is great and i use one for time machine and the other for basic storage on my imac 24″ SWEET!

Strange whey nexstar didn’t just do this. They sure turned a lot of people off with the noise. This review would be a 2 Star without the mod. It would be a 5 star if the fan noise was as it is after modding it.

Inexpensive, easy to use, and does the job. Just pop in two hard drives, connect it to your Mac vis USB, and there you have it. It is surprisingly difficult to find units, like this one, that will just allow you to install 2 hard drives and use the drives separately, with no RAID configuration. I needed two drives, but did not want to buy (or have cluttering up my desk) two separate enclosures. Enter the Vantec. There is also an option to set up the two drives as JBOD (both drives combined into one large virtual drive) if you so choose, but no RAID. However, if you are looking for a RAID enclosure, just buy another (virtually ANY other) enclosure on the market.

I just purchased this to house two drives for basic backup purposes. I was very impressed while unboxing: solid case (the black burnished steel has a cool look and feel), easy connections, not too bright lights. Overall it’s a great enclosure.

But I’m returning it, because the fan never turns off. The noise really is loud enough to be annoying. If the fan only ran when the drive was heating up – I’d be happy. However, I won’t be able to deal with this constant white noise.

After purchasing this (spur of the moment, not on amazon), I found a great review here (http://www.modders-inc.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&file=print&reid=222) which has lots of pics, mentions the benefits, but also mentions the noise. If you’re looking for a more detailed review before purchasing, go check that one out.
